The Journey of Weight Loss after 40
After high school, I became a corporate slave that made me lose time for almost everything, including preparing for my meals. So I ended up depending what I eat to those fast food chains that serve grease in a bun. I told myself, I am young, I can handle the extra flab, but I promised myself I will take control before I reach 35.
Well, to cut the long story short, my hard work paid off and at 43 years old, I did work for the government. And I am also 40 pounds over weight.
Is weight loss even possible after I hit this wonderful age of arthritis and rheumatism?
I considered buying one of those work out machines but that really did not work for me as they caused aching joints after, even in the lowest setting. So I talked to my doctor and he told me the bare truth. I had to change my eating habits.
It struck me as odd and somewhat funny that it took someone with a medical license to make me realize the truth in something that my grandmother, who passed away a few years back bless her soul, told me multiple times every time I went home to check up on her. “Eat right David or you will never get a girl friend.”
It took a while before I got the hang of it, but I think I am getting there. In 6 months, I have lost 40 pounds and I have never felt better in the past 10 years. Here are the drastic things I have done to my eating regimen change.
* No to fast food. This was the first and the hardest thing I had to do. Fast food was with me when I was just a struggling marketing assistant making my way through my credit card bills. I had a few slip ups I admit, but with determination, I was able to curb my pizza and burger cravings. All it took was for me to find a better alternative to crave. And that was banana chips for me.
* No to carbonated beverages. The second hardest thing to do. I never was a coffee person and cola kept me awake when I had to do an all nighter for a presentation. But I had to fight the urge to run to the vending machine and look where it got me.
* I began preparing my own meals. It took a while before I finally mastered making palatable food but changing your eating regimen is not a simple task. With me preparing my meals, it made me more conscious of what I put in my meals and it made me lose weight faster.
These were the top 3 things that made me achieve my weight loss. Coupled with a brisk weekly (not even daily) walk for at least an hour, I sky rocketed to losing 40 pounds just like that in 6 months. And I could’ve done this earlier if I had just listened to my grandmother.
